Your profile may have a red dot waiting.

Google is rolling an AI agent into Business Profile messaging, and it replies to routine customer texts instantly—so "are you open Saturday?" at 7 PM doesn't require anyone on your team to stop what they're doing and type an answer.

For any business where the person closest to the phone is also the person doing the actual work, that matters. A message that sits for two hours is a lead that may already be talking to someone else. The agent picks up where availability leaves off.

Here's what the feature actually does, what it won't, and how to get it working.

What "AI-Powered Messaging" Actually Means

AI-powered messaging is a feature inside Google Business Profile—your free listing on Google Search and Maps—that puts an AI agent between a customer's first question and your team. An AI agent is simply a software program that reads and responds to messages on your behalf, automatically.

When a customer finds your business on Google and taps the message button, they text you from their phone's native messaging app. The agent picks up instantly and replies using information already in your Business Profile: your hours, services, menu items, listed prices, and so on.

Routine questions—"Are you open on Sundays?" or "Can I book for Saturday?"—get answered right away. Google's own example shows the agent pulling up menu items with photos and prices, then offering open reservation times. If a question goes beyond what your profile can support, the agent hands the conversation to you. You can also jump in and take over at any time. Everything—whether the agent handled it or you did—shows up in your Business Profile dashboard.

Google describes this as a pilot that is expanding to more businesses. Not every account has access yet, but that window is widening.

Why a Faster First Reply Changes the Outcome

When someone searches for a plumber, a physical therapist, or a cleaning service, they often contact more than one business. The first reply tends to win the conversation. An agent that responds instantly—evenings, weekends, no exceptions—is competing against a human at another business who may not see the message until morning.

The agent doesn't replace your team. It filters for them. Routine questions get handled automatically. Messages that require a real decision—pricing a job, handling a complaint, scheduling something complicated—still come to a person. Your staff spends less time typing predictable answers and more time on work that actually needs them.

One technical note worth knowing: the AI agent only works for customers on phones and networks that support RCS. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is an updated texting standard—think of it as a smarter version of a standard SMS. Whether a customer can reach the agent through RCS depends on their carrier and device. Customers on unsupported setups will still reach you, but those messages go straight to your phone rather than through the agent. Standard text rates may apply for those conversations.

Before You Turn It On: Get Your Profile Ready

The agent can only answer questions as well as your profile can. If your hours are wrong, the agent confirms wrong hours. If your services list is vague, customers get vague answers. This is true of any AI tool that draws on a data source—this one is no different.

Work through this before you enable the feature:

Ten minutes on this now prevents the agent from confidently delivering wrong information to every customer who texts you next month.

How to Turn It On

Look for a red dot on the Messages section of your Business Profile—that's Google's signal that AI-powered messaging is available on your account.

  1. Open your Google Business Profile by searching your business name on Google while signed in, then clicking into your profile dashboard.
  2. Go to Messages in the menu.
  3. If the feature is available on your account, you'll see a welcome screen or setup prompt. Follow it through.
  4. Read the terms before confirming. Google spells out what the agent can and can't do, and what applies to customers reaching you outside the RCS network.
  5. Once enabled, test it yourself. Text your business from a personal phone. Ask about your hours. Ask about a specific service. If the answer is wrong or incomplete, go back to your profile and fix the underlying information—the agent is only as good as what's there.

If you don't see the option yet, the profile work above is still worth doing. Complete, accurate profiles perform better in local search with or without AI messaging, and you'll be ready the moment the prompt appears.

What the Agent Won't Do

Set realistic expectations now.

The sources describe the agent handling routine questions and offering reservation times, but they don't detail how deeply it connects to external scheduling or booking tools you may already use. If you run a separate system for appointments, don't assume the agent can write into it. Test what it actually does in your account before you rely on it for booking.

It won't handle complaints well. If someone texts that they're unhappy with a job, the agent will hit its limit quickly and hand off to you—which is the right behavior, but you need to be ready to respond when that handoff happens. An escalated conversation from a frustrated customer is not one to find two days later.

When the agent can't answer something, it hands the conversation off rather than guessing. Your profile's completeness is what determines how often that escalation happens.

What to Do This Week

  1. Audit your Business Profile today. Log in and go through your hours, services, photos, and business description. Fix anything outdated or missing. This pays off regardless of whether you have AI messaging access yet.
  1. Write out your most common customer questions. Think about hours, service areas, what to expect on a first visit, payment methods, and what's included in each service. Add them to your Business Profile Q&A section so the information is there when the agent needs it.
  1. Check your Messages tab for the red dot. If AI-powered messaging is available on your account, the setup prompt will be there. Follow the steps above to turn it on.
  1. Test it from a personal phone. Ask what your hours are. Ask about a specific service. Make sure the answers match reality—and update your profile if they don't.
  1. Make sure handoff notifications reach the right person. When the agent escalates a conversation to a human, that message needs to land with whoever on your team can actually respond. Check that your Business Profile notifications are on and routed to the right place.

A complete, accurate profile is what makes the agent useful and what makes your listing more visible in local and AI-powered search—with or without the messaging feature. Start there, and the rest follows.

Quick answers

Is Google's AI-powered messaging feature free?

Google describes the AI agent itself as available at no cost. However, customers who reach you outside the RCS network may be subject to standard text rates on their end. Read Google's terms when you enable the feature so you know exactly what applies.

Will the agent work for all of my customers, regardless of their phone?

The AI agent works for customers on phones and networks that support RCS, an updated texting standard. Whether a specific customer can reach the agent through RCS depends on their carrier and device. Customers on unsupported setups still reach you—their messages just go straight to your phone instead of through the agent.

What happens when the agent can't answer a customer's question?

The agent hands the conversation off to you rather than guessing. You can also jump in and take over at any time. All messages—whether the agent handled them or not—appear in your Business Profile dashboard.

My business doesn't have the AI messaging option yet. Is there anything I can do now?

Yes—update your hours, services, photos, business description, and Q&A section now. Google is rolling the feature out to more accounts, and a complete profile is what the agent draws on to answer questions. Getting it accurate now means you're ready the moment the option appears, and it improves your visibility in local search in the meantime.
